Intervista con Tony Rebel
Non pensiamo assolutamente di eccedere in nostalgia o revivalismo, se crediamo che la forza di Tony Rebel stia in una attitudine positiva e in uno stile molto legati alle radici del reggae ed al talk-over degli anni settanta (a personaggi come I Roy e Big Youth) e che questi si manifestino in una grande attenzione sia agli argomenti toccati dalle liriche (Tony Rebel e' da sempre uno dei personaggi piu' conscious in circolazione) sia alle modalita' espressive. Infatti il deejay style di Tony Rebel nasce dalle sue esperienze giovanili nei sound systems di Manchester, ma anche (per sua diretta ammissione) dalla poesia 'orale' in patois di Miss Lou Bennett, probabilmente la prima voce poetica popolare jamaicana a rivendicare una dignita' letteraria per il patois, la lingua delle campagne e dei ghetti.
Come lui stesso spiega nell'intervista, Tony Rebel ha iniziato a cantare all'inizio degli anni ottanta dapprima a Mandeville e poi a Kingston : tra i vari sounds in cui canta ai suoi inizi prima di approdare al Youth Promotion Sound di Sugar Minott, troviamo Thunderstorm, Wha Dat ma soprattutto Destiny Outernational, in cui e' compagno di apprendistato di un altro ragazzo di grande energia, Garnett Silk di cui diviene fraterno amico. (ascoltate sul disco postumo di G.Silk 'Journey', uno stralcio di intervista in cui Tony e Garnett ridono insieme di queste esperienze).
Il suo primo singolo risale al 1988 e porta il titolo di 'Casino' (MGB records). Realizza singoli anche per Delroy 'Callo' Collins e Shocking Vibes, prima di intraprendere un fruttuoso sodalizio con Donovan Germain e la sua Penthouse label. le sue produzioni di Donovan Germain, oltre che su singolo trovano posto sugli albums 'Die hard' (voll.1 & 2, Penthouse 1990) condivisi con Cutty Ranks e sul suo primo album 'Rebel with a cause' (Penthouse 1992). In quegli anni continua a lavorare con tutti i produttori del corrente digital style: Digital B, Xterminator, Redman, Startrail e Two Friends. Oltre all'album Penthouse, nel 1992 esce anche 'Rebellious', un album prodotto da Sky High & Mau Mau in cui abbiamo intense combinations con Half Pint e Garnett Silk.
A questo punto, sulla scia di altre ragga stars come Shabba Ranks o Cobra, Tony Rebel ottiene un contratto con una grossa casa discografica, la Columbia, per cui esce un album, 'Vibes of the time' (1993). Tra gli altri suoi dischi significativi di quel periodo abbiamo un fortunato singolo per Steelie & Clevie dal titolo 'Reggae on top', mentre la bellissima 'Sweet Jamaica' (Digital B) viene scelta a far parte della colonna sonora del film 'Cool runnings'.
A questo punto, mentre da un lato l'apparente appeal commerciale del ragga stenta a dare frutti sul mercato mondiale e Tony, insieme agli altri deejays perde il suo contratto con la Columbia, dall'altro, in Jamaica il reggae, grazie al lavoro dello stesso Rebel e Garnett Silk, riprende familiarita' con le tematiche roots and culture, e Tony Rebel e' uno degli artisti piu' importanti in questo senso.
L'artista di Manchester continua a registrare ottimi singoli su tutti i migliori ritmi, finche' nel 1996 non inaugura la sua Flames label con l'incredibile singolo 'Jah is by my side', che viene seguito negli anni successivi da ottimi sforzi come 'Sabbath meditation' o 'Can't cool', ma soprattutto dall'album 'If Jah' (VP, 1997), uno dei migliori albums reggae degli ultimi anni.

We think Rebel's positive attitude is strictly related to the roots of
reggae and to the seventies style of deejays like Big Youth and IRoy. The
manifestation of it is in Rebel's conscious lyrics and in his great capacity
to write songs, giving great dignity to his language. In fact, Rebel's
deejay style is coming both from his experiences as a youth in the
Manchester sound systems, and from Miss Lou
Bennett's popular Jamaican poetry (she is the first person to claim
artistic dignity for patois, the language of the country and ghetto).
As the Rebel himself explains in the interwiew, he started his career at the
beginning of the eighties in Manchester and then in Kingston. He worked hard
singing in dancehalls, and in sound systems, such as Thunderstorm, Wha Dat,
and Destiny Outernational ( in which he shared the mike with a promising
youth of great energy who became one of his closest friends: Garnett
Silk)Listen to the posthumous record of G. Silk"Journey" in which Tony and
Garnett recount this experience . Rebel also worked with Sugar Minott's
Youths Promotion at this time.
He released his first single in l988 by the title of "Casino" (MGB label)
and worked with Delroy "Callo" Collins and Shocking Vibes, and then he
started a fruitful deal with Donovan Germain's Penthouse. His Penthouse
tunes are available on the "Die Hard" albums (Vol. 1 &2, Penthouse l990),
alongside Cutty Ranks, and in his first album "Rebel With a Cause"
(Penthouse l992). In those digital years he workedfor a lot of producers:
Digital B, Xterminator, Redman, Startrail and Two Friends, and he had
another album out:"Rebellious", produced by Sky High and Mau Mau. At that
point the major labels became interested in digital ragga and Reble signed a
deal with Columbia, which released "Vibes of the Time"(l993). Among the
highlights of that
period we have the single "Reggae on Top" for Steelie & Clevie, and the
inclusion of his "Sweet Jamaica" on the soundtrack of the movie "Cool
Runnings".
In the second half of the nineties, Jamaican music seemed to lose the
attention of the major labels and Columbia stopped their deal with Tony
Rebel . But, Jamaican reggae, thanks to people like Garnett Silk and the
Rebel himself, recaptured the roots and culture message. In this new stream
of consciousness, Rebel is one of the best artists and he never stopped
recording singles for all the best producers. In l996 he set up his own
Flames label, having great success with the killer single, "Jah Is By My
Side", Followed during the next years by great efforts like "Sabbath
Meditation" , "Can't Cool" and by the "If Jah" album (VP, l997) that is one
of the best reggae albums of these last years
