Artist: Beres Hammond Title: Music is life Label: VP Recensito da: Per Tosi Scroll to right column for english version Negli ultimi tempi Beres Hammond e' veramente molto prolifico: la sua etichetta personale Harmony House e' attiva come non mai ed e' apprezzatissima per la sua vena melodica inimitabile, gli ottimi suoni frutto dell'utilizzo di strumentazione acustica (ascoltate la batteria di ogni singolo Harmony House e capirete subito cosa sto dicendo), e una grande capacita' di valorizzare gli artisti siano essi veterani come per esempio Tony Curtis e Half Pint o newcomers come Daville o Anthony Cruz. Oltre a questo Beres fa capolino in modo impeccabile anche in altre etichette con altri azzeccatissimi singoli, e con queste premesse e' quasi ovvio dire che questo 'Music is life' era veramente attesissimo da tutti a quasi tre anni di distanza dal precedente 'A day in the life...', ed e' assolutamente un ottimo lavoro. Nella sua versione in CD trovano posto diciassette brani (cinque in piu' del vinile) di cui ben sette gia' editi su singolo. Di questi, ben quattro tra cui le gemme purissime 'They gonna talk' e 'Rock away' sono usciti su Harmony House, le due ballate r&b 'Mary Mary' e 'Honey, wine and love songs' su Xterminator e la contagiosa 'I love Jah' (in combination con Flourgon) sulla Fat Eyes label di Fatta Pottinger e Bulby York. Questo comunque non significa che 'Music is life' sia una semplice collezione di singoli di successo: anche il restante materiale e' assolutamente all'altezza dei capolavori citati, Beres canta e scrive al solito con grande classe e sincerita' e possiamo dire che 'Music is life' e' un riuscito tentativo di mettere insieme un pugno di canzoni che vengono dal cuore, le canzoni da brivido che ti fanno ballare tutta la notte di cui Beres parla in 'Rock away' accennando una personale Hall Of Fame in cui trovano posto personaggi come John Holt e U Roy ma anche Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder e Marvin Gaye. Il materiale prodotto da Beres stesso e registrato nei suoi studi presenta il tocco tipico Harmony House di cui si e' parlato ed anche nel caso in cui ci troviamo alle prese di do-overs su ritmi famosi, come per 'Dusty road' sul ritmo di 'I'm just a guy' o 'xxxx' sullo Skylarking riddim, l'approccio strumentale e gli arrangiamenti sono ugualmente assai freschi e spontanei. Al di la di queste considerazioni c'e' spazio per i giudizi personali: a mio avviso la presenza di Wyclef Jean sul latin groove di 'Dance 4 me' faceva in effetti sperare qualcosina di meglio, e vorrei concludere la recensione citando ancora la bellissima 'Music is life' (vorrei un remix con gli stupendi fiati maggiormente in evidenza) e la magica soul ballad 'African people' in cui Beres e' affiancato da Pam Hall e dalla struggente chitarra di Bopee Bowen. 'Music is life' si candida sicuramente al titolo di miglior disco reggae del 2001: non contiene diavolerie che porteranno Beres Hammond ai vertici delle pop charts, ma contiene di sicuro la voce toccante e sincera di uno dei piu' grandi artisti che il reggae di oggi puo' schierare tra le sue fila. During the recent times the man Beres Hammond is working very hard: his Harmony House label is releasing a lot of good singles and it's featuring a typical touch with great acoustic reggae sounds, truly great harmonies (listen to that great drum song!!!) and a great capacity to put the singers on high standards no matter they're veterans as Tony Curtis or Half Pint or newcomers as Daville and Anthony Cruz. Beres is singing great singles for other producers too, and it is such a great time to release his own brand new album. 'Music is life' is a great album and it contains seventeen tunes, seven of which yet released as singles: four of these tunes incuding pure gems as 'They gonna talk' and 'Rock away' were released on his Harmony House, the r&b sweet ballads 'Mary Mary' and 'Honey, wine and love songs' released on Xterminator and the anthem 'I love Jah' (featuring Flourgon) released by Fatta & Bulby's Fat Eyes label. This doesn't matter 'Music is life' is a pure singles collection: the other songs are great and Beres is singing and writing as good as ever with great class and sincerity. 'Music is life' is a great bunch of 'songs that used to rock away' as he's singing on 'Rock away': Beres sings in that tune a great personal hall of fame of music with names as Dennis Brown, John Holt and U Roy but is including Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye too. His self-produced material is very fresh and exciting and in the case you find some do-over on foundation riddims as Skylarking (xxx) or 'I'm just a guy' ('Dusty road') the musical approach is very spontaneous and is getting the better vibe from it. I was expecting for more from the Beres/Wyclef Jean combination on the latin groove 'Dance 4 me', but I truly love 'Music is life' (let's do a great 'horn mix' as single, please!) and the magic soul ballad 'African people' featuring Pam Hall and the lovely Bopee Bowen's guitar chords. 'Music is life' will be one of the best 2001 reggae albums: it doesn't contain pop charts tricks but the touching voice of one of the better reggae artists ever.
