Artist: Qshan Dia Title: Journey Label: J&D Recensito da: Per Tosi Scroll to right column for english version Una autentica sorpresa ci giunge dalla scena reggae USA: Kellis Quashie e' un eccellente reggae singer molto nella vena di Bushman e Luciano, ed ha scelto come nome d'arte Qshan Dia. Di lui non sappiamo molto (anche il booklet di questo CD e' avaro di notizie) ma pare si muova nella scena del reggae a New York City. Questo suo primo CD 'Journey' e' veramente uno dei migliori prodotti del 2001 che arriva da un artista esordiente, ed e' veramente un peccato che la sua reperibilita' non sia cosi' semplice qui in Italia. Qshan Dia appare sulla copertina vestito di nero suonando una chitarra acustica, quasi a sottolineare la semplicita' e l'approccio diretto della sua musica: in effetti questo artista e' veramente un autore di canzoni roots vibranti e dirette e la produzione molto efficace e scarna evidenzia la sua bella voce e il 'nocciolo' dei brani. 'Journey' si pare con una bellissima 'ballad' acustica intitolata 'Love' e gia' al secondo brano, la title track 'Journey' troviamo delle notevoli assonanze con Bushman, evidenziate anche da una certa simlitudine nello stile compositivo. Nelle restanti tracce comunque Kellis da prova di notevole ispirazione e raggiunge gli effetti migliori in canzoni semi-acustiche come 'What is meant for me shall be', 'God's identification' e 'Jahovia', anche se questo 'Journey' presenta una notevole varieta' di spunti, sempre all'interno di una proposta di roots reggae moderno e assai personale. A parte questa vena acusticheggiante, ci sono anche svariati episodi piu' ritmati come la saltellante e quasi 'dancehall' 'Together forever' o l'ottima 'Too late'. Non mancano gli ospiti e troviamo il quasi onnipresente Yami Bolo duettare con Qshan Dia in 'Warfare', mentre nella conclusiva 'The poor's cry' tocca al giovane Richie Spice a dividere il microfono con l'altrettanto giovane titolare del CD. Come si diceva, il pregio maggiore del lavoro di produzione e' la semplicita' e l'immediatezza: il produttore di 'Journey' e' Derrick Moo-Young e al mixaggio delle tracce troviamo eccellenti personaggi come Philip Smart, Sidney Mills e Colin 'Bulby' York. Questo 'Journey' e' un ottimo debutto e mette Qshan Dia in evidenza come voce dei 'sufferers' moderni: la scena del reggae jamaicano in USA e' intimamente connessa con quella jamaicana e non ci stupiremmo di trovare questo giovane artista corteggiato dai jamaican producers, se e' vero come sembra che dei suoi concerti si sta gia' occupando Richard Bell della Startrail Productions. A true surprise comes from U.S: reggae scene: Kellis Quashie is an excellent reggae singer really similar to Bushman and Luciano, and has chosen Qshan Dia as artistic name. We don't know so much about him (even CD's booklet is poor in terms of news) but it seems that he moves around New York reggae scene. 'Journey', his first CD; is really one of the best productions of 2001 from esordient artists, and it's really a pity that in Italy it is so difficult to find. Qshan Dia is on the cover black dressed, with an acoustic guitar in his hands, to enlight the semplicity and the direct approach of his music: indeed, this artist is really an author of roots songs direct and vibrating, and the production, simple but effective, puts in evidence his beautiful voice and the 'matter' of the tracks. 'Journey' is opened by a wonderful acoustic 'ballad' called 'Love' but in the second track, the one which gives the name to the album, 'Journey', we already find many assonances with Bushman, underlined also by a similarity in the writing style. Anyway in the remaining tracks Kellis shows a strong inpiration and reaches the best effects in semi-acoustic songs like 'What is meant for me shall be', 'God's identification' and 'Jahovia', even if 'Journey' presents a large variety of musical hints, still in a modern roots reggae idea although widely personal. Apart of the acoustic spreads there are also many marks with more rhythm like the jumping and almost dancehall 'Together forever' or the excellent 'Too late'. There are also some guests, like Yami Bolo in 'Warfare', while in the conclusion, with 'The poor's cry', it's up to the young Richie Spice to share the microphone with the equally young CD holder. As already said, the greatest value of the production job is its simplicity and immediateness: 'Journey''s producer is Derrick Moo-Young while on tracks mixing there are excellent characters like Philip Smart, Sidney Mills and Colin 'Bulby' York. This 'Journey' is an excellent debut and places Qshan Dia in evidence as voice of modern "sufferers"; in the U.S. the scene of jamaican reggae is strictly linked with the jamaican one and we won't be surprised to see this young artist demanded by jamaican producers, if the truth, as it seems, is that Richard Bell, on behalf of Startrail Productions, is already dealing with his concerts.
