Artist: Bushman Title: Higher Ground Label: Greensleeves Recensito da: Per Tosi Scroll to right column for english version Non molto dopo il primo eccellente tour italiano di Bushman esce su Greensleeves il suo nuovo album 'Higher ground' prodotto come il precedente capolavoro 'Total commitment' dal leggendario King Jammys. Tra i due albums Bushman aveva lavorato a Londra con la Stingray Crew ed il risultato e' un CD intitolato A better place. Questo lavoro era stato distribuito dalla label statunitense Artists Only! finche' il potente Jammys non e' riuscito ad interromperne temporaneamente la distribuzione per evitare interferenze al proprio prodotto. La altissima qualita' di 'Total commitment' ha provocato ovviamente delle grandi aspettative per questo 'Higher ground' ed il paragone con il bellissimo CD uscito nel 1999 e' naturale ed 'Higher ground' appare in qualche modo inferiore al CD precedente nonostante sia veramente ricco di ottimi spunti. I brani sono comunque mediamente ottimi ed ottimamente prodotti da Jammys nella vena consueta che alterna brani piu' leggeri nella vecchia tradizione della dancehall di cui Jammy e' uno dei creatori, a brani piu' roots che si rifanno, nonostante i suoni moderni, alle esperienze compiute da Jammys negli anni settanta. Al primo gruppo citato appartengono tunes spontanee come 'Your love', 'On the road' (la frase che contiene la frase che da il titolo all'album) o 'Give some more' mentre al secondo gruppo tracce come 'Hey V' o 'Live up'. Se si esclude l'apparizione di 'Love of the heart' su un 'Greensleeves sampler' e di 'Your love' uscita su singolo, tutte le restanti tracce sono inedite e costituiscono un ottimo nucleo di canzoni con la voce calda di Bushman al meglio, ed ancora una volta rievocante la voce di Luciano, anche se Bushman in effetti dal punto di vista delle melodie ha da tempo trovato la sua vena personale. Una cosa che l'accomuna a Luciano e' comunque il voler essere assolutamente 'conscious' in ogni sua traccia e di dare la assoluta preminenza alla spiritualita' ed ai messaggi positivi anche tenendo conto della durezza della vita di tutti i giorni. Tornando ai singoli brani, troviamo in 'Fire pon a deadas' un seguito ideale di 'Fire pon a weak heart' di 'Total commitment', mentre anche in questo album non manca una efficacissima 'herb tune' intitolata '100% the highest', mentre nella insinuante 'Rasta party' Bushman narra di un reggae party dove non mancano i grossi nomi. La partnership del piccolo cantante di St. Catherine con King Jammys appare rafforzata cosi' come e' in ascesa la credibilita' di Bushman sulla scena del reggae mondiale: se 'Higher ground' non supera 'Total commitment', i due lavori costituiscono comunque il meglio di un artista che probabilmente ci fara' ascoltare ancora grandi cose negli anni a venire. One of the most interesting releases of this year 2001 is the new Bushman's album 'Higher Ground'. This brand new CD is produced as the 1999 'Total commitment' album by the legendary King Jammys and the high expectations about the release of this brand new set are causing obvious comparisons with the 1999 set. 'Higher ground' is not better than the 'Total commitment' album although it is a very strong set. The songs in it are very good and very well produced by Jammys. The man Jammy develope his riddims on his natural directions. Some tunes as 'Your love', 'On the road' or 'Give some more' are using dancehall riddims while others as 'Hey V' or 'Live up' are on a roots mood with the typical Jammys sound. Bushman's voice is very similar to Luciano's but he's singing very personal melodies over the tough Jammys riddims: the man is singing on a very unique way and is putting very conscious messages in every lyrics of the album. Amongst the better tunes we have 'Fire pon the deadas'a tune about ital food that is the ideal follow up to the popular 'Fire pon a weak heart' tune on the 'Total commitment' album. In this 'Higher ground' CD. For all the ganja smokers which did enjoy the 'Cannabis' tune on the 'Nyah man chant', Bushman is singing in this brand new set about the '100% (the highest)' so don't miss him! This 'Higher ground' CD is getting the partership with Jammys stronger and after that Bushman have a very good credibility as roots singer on the worldwide reggae scene.
