Title: Reggae Anthology: Music Works Classics - The Gussie Clark Story Label: VP Recensito da: Per Tosi Scroll to right column for english version VP ha scelto inconsapevolmente il tragico 11 settembre 2001 come release date di quattro CD che inaugurano una serie, la 'Reggae Anthology' che vuole incorniciare dei produttori o degli artisti 'storici' della storia recente del reggae attraverso le sue cose migliori. Uno di questi CDs e' dedicato al periodo d'or della musica prodotta da Gussie Clarke. Il titolo 'Music Works classics' non poteva essere piu' azzeccato anche perche' Music Works, oltre ad essere il nome della label principale di Gussie e' diventato anche il nome dei suoi rinomati studi aperti nel 1986 e diventati la fucina del suono reggae degli anni successivi. In questo CD troviamo in diciannove tracce la fotografia di un periodo in cui la creativita' di Gussie e del suo staff produceva grande musica a standards qualitativi elevatissimi e veniva premiata da straordinari risultati di vendita in tutto il mondo. Da paura le tre tracce che ci introducono nel suono Music Works: incominciamo con la leggendaria 'Pass the kutchie', i Mighty Diamonds da brivido sulla Full Up version in un suono dancehall prima che 'Sleng Teng' stravolgesse le carte in tavola. Chi non la conosce dovrebbe comprarsi questo 'Music Works Classics- The Gussie Clark Story' solo per questo pezzo: e pensare che come secondo e terzo pezzo troviamo 'Rumours' di Gregory Isaacs e 'Telephone love' di J.C. Lodge, due tune fondamentali sullo stesso ritmo, uno dei gioielli di casa Music Works ed un esempio di come la tecnologia aiutava il reggae in quel periodo a rinnovarsi pur restando legato alla sua gloriosa tradizione. Nelle restanti tracce troviamo un po' tutti i classici prodotti da Gussie Clarke nel periodo in cui registrava i personaggi piu' 'caldi' in circolazione, gente come Shabba Ranks, Cocoa Tea, Dennis Brown, Freddie McGregor, Deborahe Glasgow o i gia' menzionati Gregory Isaacs e J.C. Lodge. Questa compilation non conosce momenti deboli o brani pensati come rirmpitivi e tutti i suoi brani sono momenti di grande forza: se non conoscete Gussie Clarke ed i suoi lavori ai Music Works studios non c'e' un punto di partenza migliore per questo disco, considerando che molti degli albums classici da cui sono tratti questi pezzi sono ancora reperibili con facilita' sul mercato. VP has unwillingly chosen the tragical Sept. 11th 2001 to be the release date for four CDs which give the start to a serie, "Reggae Anthology", with the goal to frame producers and "hystorical" artists of recent reggae through their best works. One among these CDs is dedicated to the golden age of the music produced by Gussie Clarke . The title "Music Works classics" couldn't be more guessed also because Music Works, other than being the name of Gussie's main label, is also the name of his studios opened in 1986 and become the forge of reggae sound of the following years. We find in the nineteen tracks of this CD the picture of a period during which Gussie's creativity, together with his staff, produced a great music with very high quality standards, and was rewarded by extraordinary sales results all around the world. Astonishing are the three tracks which introduce in Music Works' sound: we begin with the legendary "Pass the kutchie", a Full Up version by the Mighty Diamonds in a dancehall sound still "unrevolutioned" by Sleng Teng. Indeed, even only this track makes "Music Works Classics- The Gussie Clark Story" worth to buy; and more, the second and the third tracks are "Rumours" by Gregory Isaacs and "Telephone Love" by J.C. Lodge, two fundamental tunes on the same rhythm, a jewel by Music Works and an example of how, in that period, technology was helping reggae to renew still remaining on its glorious tradition. The remaining tracks offer Gussie Clarke's classical productions, belonging to his activity with "hot" artists, like Shabba Ranks, Cocoa Tea, Dennis Brown, Freddie McGregor, Deborahe Glasgow or the already reported Gregory Isaacs and J.C. Lodge. This compilation doesn't meet weak moments or traks intended to be "filler", and all tracks are characterized by a great strenght: if you don't know Gussie Clarke and his productions at Music Works there isn't any better starting point than this CD, considering that many of the classical albums where the tracks come from are still on the market shelves.
