Artist: Anthony B Title: Live on the battlefield Label: Jahmin' Records Recensito da: Pier Tosi Scroll to right column for english version Se il reggae ad un certo punto degli anni settanta ha mutuato dal rock l'abitudine di realizzare sontuosi e vibranti live albums e' soprattutto perche' i primi live acts reggae protagonisti di cio', personaggi come Bob Marley, Burning Spear o Black Uhuru non avevano nulla da invidiare come forza espressiva e carica live ai loro colleghi rock che volevano registrare su disco il particolarissimo 'rito' del concerto quasi fosse una vera e propria celebrazione. Anthony B in Italia e' fortunatamente molto noto ed e' probabilmente il nuovo artista che riprende meglio anche a livello di citazioni nei suoi spettacoli e come solidita' del suo spettacolo la forza espressiva del vecchio roots, ed e' quindi molto apprezzato il fatto che il suo spettacolare show dal vivo sia 'immortalato' dalla label francese Jahmin' in un doppio CD (ne esiste anche una versione DVD e della distribuzione in Italia di entrambi i prodotti si occupa la milanese Jahmekya). I trenta brani di questo concerto sono stati registrati a Tolosa in Francia solamente qualche giorno prima che Anthony B facesse esplodere la sua grande carica su palco del Rototom Sunsplash 2001 ad Osoppo: il tour dello scorso anno promuoveva il suo CD 'That's life', cosi' tra i brani troviamo molte tracce provenienti da quel lavoro ma anche ovviamente gli straordinari cavalli di battaglia del primo periodo di Anthony B come 'Fire pon Rome' ed anche qualche chicca proveniente dalla sua caleidoscopica produzione su singolo per i vari produttori jamaicani. Con grande gioia del pubblico, l'artista di Portmore riprende il suo cantante-guida, Peter Tosh cantando 'Equal rights' e 'Johhny B Goode' una di seguito all'altra sul CD 1 mentre a meta' del CD 2 si esibisce in un accenno del brano-simbolo 'One love' di Bob Marley. Possiamo dire che questo doppio CD rende come meglio non potrebbe la grande energia e carica di Anthony B e le versioni live dei suoi brani, concentrate ed eseguite live style tutte d'un fiato una di seguito all'altra possono sicuramente essere apprezzate anche da chi ha ascoltato e riascoltato le rispettive versioni 'ufficiali' dei brani. In varie occasioni come per esempio 'Mister Heartless' e 'Love or infatuation' invece i brani si dilatano in lunghezza ed in varie occasioni Anthony B si rivolge al pubblico cercando di spiegare i principi della sua militanza senza comunque cadere mai in contraddizioni lampanti come accade a volte ad alcuni suoi molto apprezzati colleghi. Per concludere comunque possiamo dire che questo live CD e' imprescindibile per i grandi fans di Anthony B ma e' consigliato anche a tutti gli amanti del nuovo roots reggae jamaicano. Since the Seventies reggae music took from the rock the habitude to be released on luxurious and intense live albums, and that happened overall because of the characters who led the scenes, Bob Marley, Burning Spear or Black Uhuru, hadn't anything less than their colleagues from rock musicin expressive strenght and "live show" attitude, to release records with the goal of celebrate the extraordinary "ritual" of a concert. Anthony B is well known in Italy, and probably is the artist who better express, for quotes during his shows, and solidity of his live style, the expressiveness of the old roots, so we really appreciate that the french label Jahmin' decided to "immortalize" his live performance in a double CD (a DVD version is also available, both versions are distributed in Italy by Jahmekya, Milan). The thirty tracks of this concert have been recorded in Toulouse, France, just a few days before his explosion on the stage of Osoppo's Rototom Sunsplash 2001; last year's tour promoted also his CD "That's life", then we can find, among the others, many tracks from that work as well as his masterpieces of the first period, like "Fire pon Rome" and some pearl coming from his caleidoscopic production on singles for the different jamaican producers. For crowd's joy, Portomer's artist draws on his lead singer, Peter Tosh, performing "Equal rights" and "Johnny B. Goode" one after the other on CD 1, while at the half of CD 2 performs an allusion of the symbol song "One love" by Bob Marley. We can easily say that this CD represents the best expression of the great energy of Anthony B, and live versions of his tunes, concentrated and performed all together live style one by the other, can be surely appreciated even by who listened more and more times the respective "official" versions. In many occasions, i.e."Mister Heartless" and "Love or infatuation" there is a length extention, when Anthony B talks to the public trying to explain the principles of his militancy brilliantly avoiding the clear contradictions in which, sometimes, some of his estimated colleagues fall. In conclusion, we can steadily say that this is an irremissible CD for Anthony B's greatest fans, but is strongly suggested to all lovers of new jamaican roots reggae.
